Do the governments advise against travelling to Russia and Ukraine?

On 6 November 2026, the British FCDO advised against all travel to Russia and, for Ukraine, against all travel to parts of the country and all but essential travel to parts of western Ukraine. Canada advised "Avoid all travel" for both. The advisories guide gives the dates and the sources.

Can my travel insurance be void if I travel against official advice?

Yes, it can. The British pages state that travel insurance could be invalidated if you travel against FCDO advice. Ask your insurer to confirm in writing that your destination and dates are covered before you pay for anything.

Do I need a visa to visit Russia?

The British page for Russia says British travellers must get a visa before they travel, and the Canadian page says Canadians must apply to the Russian embassy. Rules depend on your passport, so use the official page for your own country and the embassy of the destination.

Can I enter Ukraine without a visa?

For British citizen passport holders the UK page says visa-free entry for up to 90 days in a 180-day period applies until 30 January 2027, and that the border guard has the final say. Check the current page for your own passport.

Which countries do couples use for a first meeting?

There is no official list, and we do not recommend a destination. The meeting-city guide gives a method to compare candidates, and the visas guide shows what the British pages said on 6 November 2026 about Poland, Georgia, Turkey and Moldova.

What is the 90 days in 180 days rule?

It is a rolling limit on short stays, used for example in the Schengen area, which includes Poland. You may stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period. The days are counted across all Schengen countries together, so count them if you travel more than once.

How much does a trip cost?

We do not give an average because prices change and a made-up average would mislead. The budget guide lists every cost line for both travellers and a worksheet where you enter real quotes, plus a reserve rule.

Should I pay for her ticket or her visa?

That is a personal decision. If you do, pay the airline, the hotel or the official visa page directly and send her the confirmation. Do not send money to a person or an intermediary, and treat a request for money before you have met as a reason to stop.

Where should the first meeting take place?

In a public place, in daylight or early evening, that you chose together, reached by your own transport, with a message to someone you trust at the start and the end. The first-meeting guide has a full checklist.

What if I think I am being scammed?

Stop sending money, call your bank at once, keep all messages and receipts, and report it. The United States has reportfraud.ftc.gov and the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (ic3.gov). Canada has the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca).
